Welcome to the Rare Fruit Index | ||
Founded in 1968, the Rare Fruit Index is one of the largest amateur fruit-growing organizations in the world. Its membership includes nationally recognized botanical gardens and noted international horticultural researchers, as well as hobbyists, commercial growers and representatives from institutions of higher learning. The members of twenty-two chapters and individual members reside in 48 states and territories of the United States, and our membership encompasses over 35 countries worldwide. We believe in an environmentally sound culture inclusive of any and all edible plants in the home landscape; however, Rare Fruits Index is focused on species not native to nor grown commercially in any given area. Our mission is "...to share knowledge acquired from our activities with home growers in particular and with anyone else in the world having an interest in edible plant cultivation." The Rare Fruit Index contains information on over 250 different varieties of exotic fruit. This information is available for free via the 'Glossary' link above. A good number of these fruit species can be purchased as seed, sapling tree, or plant, from one of our member nurseries; follow the 'Nursery' link to find a nursery near your home or farm. |
